The first church building at this location was established in the early 1920s, and it was later renovated and expanded in the late 1940s. The original building served as the city’s first library before being repurposed as a church.
George Ward, former mayor of Birmingham, designed Sibyl Temple as a replica of the Temple of Sibyl in Tivoli, Italy, near Rome. It was the garden gazebo of his Vestavia estate for which the City is named. In his garden it was the entrance to a bird sanctuary and it was the scene of many colorful parties. The church’s present-day structure is a classic example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture.
